The Christmas season is a time of joy, reflection, and, most importantly, sharing the story of the birth of Christ. As a sponsor with Ripples from the Well, you have the unique opportunity to spread this warmth and care through a Christmas letter to your sponsored child. These letters are more than just words on a page; to your sponsored child they are a sign of love and make a big impact in their life.
We’ve composed a few things that you can include in a letter to your sponsored child this Christmas for general guidance.
Consider Starting with Prayer
Begin your letter by sharing that you are praying for your sponsored child. This shows your deep care and concern for their wellbeing. For instance, you might write:
"Merry Christmas (Child's Name)! I am continually praying for you in your life and that you are safe, healthy, and feeling the love and peace of Jesus Christ. I pray that during good times and challenging times, you will experience God's unwavering support and presence. He assures us that He will never abandon us, a promise from Hebrews 13:5 that brings me comfort in times of worry or when facing difficulties."
Expressing Gratitude in Your Letter
After your prayer, share something you’re grateful for this year. This could be a personal reflection or an experience that highlighted God’s faithfulness in your life. Your sponsored child will appreciate hearing about your life and the things that bring you joy and thankfulness.
"This last year has been full of ups and downs, but God has provided for us every step of the way! I am so thankful to be able to write this letter to you and for how God has provided for us this year."
Sharing Your Christmas Celebrations
Describe your Christmas traditions and why this time is special to you. This could include your favorite Christmas stories, songs, or family customs. Encourage your child to share their own Christmas experiences, fostering a mutual exchange of cultures and traditions.
"Christmas holds a special place in my heart as it celebrates the time when Jesus came to earth, demonstrating God's incredible love. Our family tradition includes attending church together with my brother and his family, where we listen and reflect on the Christmas story. After church everyone goes to our mother's house and shares their favorite part of the Christmas story, what's your favorite part or verse about the birth of Jesus?"
Including a Christmas Selfie or Family Photo
A picture can speak a thousand words. Include a festive photo of you or your family. Consider taking a photo as a family holding their picture in it; this personal touch brings your world closer to your sponsored child! For example:
"We wanted to share a family Christmas photo with you! We are excited to have you in the picture with us this year! We pray God will bless you and your family in Jinja!"
Sharing a Favorite Christmas Bible Verse
Include a Bible verse that captures the essence of Christmas for you. This could be a verse from Luke or a verse about hope, joy, or God's love. For example:
"One of our favorite Christmas verses is Luke 2:8-14 where an angel of the Lord appeared to the shepherds, I couldn't even imagine what that would be like! I love that verse because even though they shepherds weren't wealthy or important, God still chose them to hear that Jesus was coming because he loves us all equally!"
How to Send Your Letter
Once your letter is ready, you can send it to Ripples from the Well by emailing a PDF, Word document, or Google Doc to Sponsor@ripplesfromthewell.org. Please email your letters by December 10 of each year to ensure that your heartfelt message reaches your sponsored child in a timely and efficient manner. Ripples from the Well screens all communications, and may suggest minor changes for cultural sensitivity on the rare occasion.
Thank you!
Your Christmas letter is a powerful tool in building a stronger bond with your sponsored child. It's not just a seasonal greeting; it's a testament to the ongoing support and love you give. As you write, remember that your words will bring joy and encouragement, making this Christmas a little brighter for a child halfway across the world.
